This time of year brings extra expenses that come with Christmas and New Year celebrations.  There are secret Santa swaps at office parties and the year end dinner with the bunch from “book club”.  Buying gifts for family and friends and an increased food and beverage bill also go hand in hand with the silly season.

You will hopefully have plans to enjoy yourself with your favourite people, and with those fun times come new photographs to capture the best moments.  When the craziness is over you will probably need a holiday just to recover from this holiday 🙂

Family Photo Shoot

Many of our friends and family are scattered around the world these days, but the festive season often sees some of them flocking home to beautiful South Africa for a much needed family-fix.  This is the perfect time to have a family photo shoot with everyone, to capture these special times together that are becoming less frequent.  Find a location that suits your family and a clothing colour scheme so that you don’t all clash with each other.  Here are a few simple tips:

  • Plan your outfits in advance:  Choose co-ordinating colours, not matching.  By selecting a colour scheme, you can achieve a more natural look using hues that complement each other.  Avoid distracting patterns, large logos and rude prints (they might be funny, but not exactly appropriate).
  • Consider your home decor:  The holidays may seem like the perfect time to bring out the Santa hats but you probably want these photos to be displayed all year round.  Make sure that the clothing and props/accessories you select blend in with the colour scheme of your home so that it doesn’t become a limited ‘seasonal’ print.
  • Keep location in mind:  Are you going to be on the beach (neutral tones) or under a tree (bright foliage)?  Select a colour palette for your outfits that will complement the setting, not compete with it.  You also don’t want to blend into the background.
  • Choose practical clothing:  you want to make sure that everyone is comfortable during the shoot.  A toddler in itchy tights is going to be scratching, not smiling.
  • Consider the timing of the shoot:  Don’t plan your shoot at a time that your child usually sleeps and make sure that everyone is rested and fed.
  • Avoid the “cheese”:  Many parents tend to shout out “cheese” to their kids just before a photo is snapped but this often just generated forced and un-natural smiles.  Speak to your photographer before-hand and let them encourage natural smiles from the kids.
  • Have fun:  Not all photo shoots have to be filled with posed shots.  Have a little fun with it by tossing your kids in the air or chasing them down the beach.  You will find that these produce the most beautiful images that show off your family and the love you share.
